Types of Pain
Allodynia
Pain caused by a stimulus of any kind (e.g., light, sound, cold) that would not normally elicit pain.
Central Sensitization
Pain pathways become hypersensitive, and the nervous system is regulated in a persistent state of high reactivity and the pain threshold is decreased.
Hyperalgesia
Nociceptors are easily triggered, causing an exaggerated pain response from stimulus that normally causes pain.
Neurogenic Pain
Pain caused by nerve tissue damage, including a lesion, compression, or a tumor. This pain can be visceral or somatic.
Nociceptive Pain
Nociceptors are activated, possibly due to tissue damage, and an inflammatory response may be triggered. Previous experience of pain can also elicit a perception of pain regardless of whether there is a direct stimulus.
Peripheral Sensitization
Increased responsiveness of peripheral nociceptive neurons to the stimulation of their respective regions of the brain causing a hypervigilant state.
Somatic Pain
Occurs when pain receptors in tissues (including the skin. muscles. skeleton, joints, and connective tissues) are activated. Typically, stimuli such as force. temperature, vibration, or swelling activate these receptors.
Visceral Pain
Occurs when pain receptors in the pelvis, abdomen, chest, or intestines are activated. We experience this type of pain when our internal organs and tissues are damaged or injured. Visceral pain is vague. not localized, and not well understood or clearly defined
